As a freshman,Elizabeth Vaughan enrolled in a singing class. The first concert of the school year was to be a performance of songs from the musical Oliver!and Vaughan would sing alone. She wasn't nervous until the week before, when she discovered that the entire school would be in1 attendance.
The day of the show,Vaughan was backstage, looking through the curtains as the hall filled with people.“We saw everyone file in:All the classes, also lunch ladies and parents,”Vaughan recalled. "It was just packed."The curtain opened and the concert began. Then Vaughan noticed something:a single microphone standing at the front of the stage ready for her performance. It was a problem she hadn't anticipated:their singing teacher had never taught them how to sing into a microphone.
“And yet it was my turn to sing,”Vaughan said.Despite her uncertainty, her singing began smoothly. Then she got to the big final part -the last high note. With her lips nearly touching the microphone, the note came exploding out of the speakers, sharp and deafeningly loud.“The audience had their jaws dropped wide open,"Vaughan recalled."I felt embarrassed.”、
Going back to class after the concert,Vaughan was stopped by a senior.Instead of making fun of her,the student smiled-and said,“You have a very powerful voice.”“And it probably was several years before I realized exactly what that moment meant for me,"she recollected.
Inspired by the student's confidence in her,Vaughan went on to study music at the University of Kansas. She's now a professional singer-songwriter,performing almost every weekend in three bands throughout Arizona.

One of the biggest reasons why people stopped visiting shops was when fashion companies started to offer free online returns.People bought more and more clothes online and tried them on in their bedrooms. If they didn't like something, they could easily send it back.So people bought more things and they returned more of them.A recent study found that nowadays,9%of UK consumers order clothes mainly to put on,take a photo, and post on social media. They then return them immediately.
But there is a big problem with returns -it's very bad for the environment.Almost all the clothes and shoes that you order online arrive in a plastic bag.About 180 billion plastic bags are produced every year for new clothes and shoes, and every return needs another new bag.It is also expensive to process returns.Someone needs to refold them, relabel them, and put them in a new bag before they can be resold.Unfortunately,it can be cheaper and easier to send returns to landfill. In the US,2.6 million tonnes of returned goods go to landfill every year. It's awful, but it is the reality of modern fashion.
Now,some fashion companies want to stop this, and they have decided to charge customers a small amount for each thing they return. We know this can work, because when supermarkets started charging people for plastic bags, people stopped using them, and brought their own bags instead.1 Charging for returns could have the same effect.
However,a lot of people aren't very happy about paying. One person posted that “the fun is over”.Some complain that they need to order the same thing in different sizes and then return the ones that don't fit. It's true that paying to return things is annoying, but it's worth it for the future of our planet.
34.What was the main reason why people bought more and more clothes online?

A team of researchers has created a map of Antarctica revealing thousands of never-before-seen hills, ridges and valleys beneath the ice. This new information could help scientists understand how the changing climate will affect the continent.
Antarctica is almost one and a half times the size of Europe. Most of it is covered in a layer of ice that's three miles thick in places, which makes it difficult to see the shape of the land underneath. The new map has changed that.
To create the new map,the team used satellite images, surveys of the surface ice and an understanding of how ice moves.Although ice behaves differently to water, the scientists were ableto figure out how the ice had flowed and pinpoint the mountains and valleys underneath the water. "It's a little bit like if you're rowing a boat in a river, and there are rocks about the rocks under the water,"said the study's lead author,Helen Ockenden from the University of Grenoble-Alpes in France.
Mapping the land underneath Antarctica is important. The continent is losing ice as the planet warms. As the ice melts,it falls into the ocean, raising global sea levels.Scientists are not sure how much ice the continent will lose in the future and how this will raise sea levels. The shape of the landscape affects how quickly ice moves across its surface, and the speed at which it pushes up sea levels. The map will give a better idea of what's going to happen in the future, experts say.
38.What makes it hard to map Antarctica?
A.Its thick ice. B.Its rough surface.
C.Its huge size. D.Its varied landscape.
39.What does the underlined word "pinpoint"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Cross. B.Survey. C.Affect. D.Locate.
40.Why is boat rowing mentioned in the text?
A.To present a challenge the team faced in mapping.
B.To introduce a mapping activity favored by the team.
C.To make the team's mapping method better understood.
D.To show how the team revealed rocks in mapping a river.
41.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us about the research?
A.Its future plan. B.Its major finding.
C.Its great significance. D.Its ongoing application.
